This work proposes a morphology-aware knowledge distillation framework for lightweight retinal vessel segmentation. Retinal vessel segmentation is important for diagnosing ophthalmic and systemic diseases, but deploying high-performance models in resource-constrained clinical settings remains challenging. The proposed method, Morphology-Aware Reconstruction Distillation (MRD), transfers the teacher model’s ability to reconstruct coherent vascular structures rather than only mimicking pixel-level statistics. Experiments across fundus photography and OCT angiography datasets show that the approach preserves delicate vascular morphology while reducing model complexity, contributing to more efficient and reliable point-of-care clinical deployment.
Congratulations to the authors on this achievement!
