This chapter addresses the growing concern over academic integrity and authenticity in programming education amid the widespread use of Generative AI (GenAI) tools such as ChatGPT. Through an empirical study involving ten educators, the authors analyzed Java programs written by students and ChatGPT, revealing that human evaluators achieved 86% detection accuracy by identifying stylistic and structural patterns such as consistent formatting, verbose comments, and over-engineered logic. To enhance scalability and transparency, the authors developed an automated detection and explanation framework based on transformer models (CodeBERT, UniXcoder, GraphCodeBERT, and LongCoder), with GraphCodeBERT achieving the best performance. Furthermore, an LLM-based explanation module using ChatGPT and Gemini was designed to generate human-readable justifications. A user study confirmed that these explanations improved educators’ understanding and trust. The study underscores the importance of combining accurate detection with interpretable explanations to foster fairness and AI literacy in programming education.

Congratulations to the authors on this achievement!
